OK, yeah, so, I live with my girlfriend and we would like to play a videogame, together, preferably on a console. This seems sort of oddly tricky, 'cos, like, stuff like halo wouldn't really be appropriate somehow. I guess what I can think of is Crystal Chronicles and maybe the Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance whatsit?
Have you ever played co-op? Do you like it? I liked the Ico-like different-ability thing it brought to Sonic 2. And its classic in Bubble Bobble, of course...
― Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Friday, 7 October 2005 22:05 (nineteen years ago) link
Co-op's brilliant, I'd always pick it over competitive play given the option. The best is that sort of pseudo-co-op stuff like in Golden Axe and Streets of Rage, where one player would accidentally hit the other and apologise for it. Later on the other player would hit them back by accident and claim it was just making up for when their friend hit them. Five minutes later it's an all-out brawl between the players! My friend and I always wanted to make a Paul W.S Anderson style video game film where the main characters kept accidentally hitting eachother in the middle of battle and apologising for it.

My top co-op, discounting Bubble Bobble because of that bloody last boss:
http://www.retrogames.co.uk/stock/assets/images/240505_Megadrive_-_Gunstar_Heroes.jpg
This had the accidental fighting thing going on too, in the way of accidentally throwing your companion into the enemies.

I remember an old hockey game I used to play with my brother, and I think we spent more times trying to start fights with each other the ice than actually trying to win the game.
There should be more unco-op co-op games.

My friend always takes turns with his girlfriend when they play Jak & Daxter and similar cartoony games. That's one option.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
PLAYER 1: "Will you get over here!"
PLAYER 2: "These heels are hard to run in!"
PLAYER 1: "There! Shoot that Balla on the corner!"
[PLAYER 2 shoots police officer. A chase ensues]
PLAYER 1: "Shit!"
PLAYER 2: "Whoops."
PLAYER 1 (as C.J.): "Hey, let's make out."
PLAYER 2 (as shirtless bald hillbilly): "Okay."
[They kiss]

Well Bubble Bobble obv for the teamwork involved.
We enjoyed Perfect Dark on the 64, might not look too great these days though.
and I cannot believe nobody has mentioned SWIV from the Amiga !!
― Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 10 October 2005 07:55 (nineteen years ago) link
Or indeed the original Silkworm, which was fine for a couple of levels but became a bit repetitive.
There was great sideways shooting on the Speccy, a budget game called Zybex I think. We played this for hours. The spectacular power up system helped it's longivity.
These days we usually just plow through the old arcade roms as two player co-ops, just inserting credits until we finish the game. Not quite how they're supposed to be played I suppose but still top fun. and kills an evening off.

Lego Star Wars. It's piss easy (instant respawn, so you can't actually lose) but great fun and you can accidentally light sabre the fuck out of your partner.

Finals week of my first semester freshman year, N1ck & I played the shit out of this thing, got drunk, played more. It only took 4 months for us to give up on college, then 3 more years to figure out how to drop out and join the military. We rarely, if ever, got past the second boss. I think 60% of deaths were caused by friendly fire/stupid errors.
― TOMBOT, Tuesday, 11 October 2005 20:05 (nineteen years ago) link
"Friendly fire" is possibly my favorite aspect of any co-op game experience. See: Getting hit in the back of the head by your buddies' punches and thrown pipes in RCR. That shit never gets old.

five years pass...
Me and gf enjoy some co-op action on the PC, both off of the same monitor, but we're running short of inspiration. We're bored of the lego games, her laptop can't run portal 2, and left 4 dead makes us hate each other. Anyone got any other recommendations?

Ha ha, forgot about worms, that might be kinda fun. Are there any double dragon style fight games with a bit better graphics knocking around? Or colourful platform games would be good (she's better than me at platformers)
Scorched Earth looks a bit chin-stroky to me, I was hoping for more shooting and fighting and blowing things up.

double dragon style fight games with a bit better graphics
I heard about a Streets of Rage remake that has all the characters from every game, new moves, and hundreds of stages. Not sure how available it is on the internets though - these things tend to be removed pretty sharpish one cease and desists are sent.

I got married to the girlfriend in the first post - co-op is clearly the sign of a keeper. Anyway we are playing League of Legends these days, just bot games on the same team. It's really good, I'd recommend it!
